Practical Art = everything locally handcrafted.
Each item you touch has at least a small impact on your daily life experience. If you carefully select those items, and they are lovingly handcrafted, your life will be enhanced and enjoyable. While we never compromise on usefulness or practicality, we do not forget to treasure beauty in small things.
Everything at Practical Art is locally handcrafted by American artisans we know. All of our offerings can be used, enjoyed and also admired.
Our craftspeople can trace their inspiration back to the Arts and Crafts movement which began at the turn of the last Century, and enjoyed its heyday from about 1880-1910. Back then, artisans reacted to the "soulless" machine-made production that started dominating everyday objects, as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The art in the handwork of working people was being replaced by precision by machines. People who appreciated the small details in things wanted to return to the days where everything was handmade and had inherent individualized beauty.
Today, there is a resurgence of appreciation for fine craftwork as we are overwhelmed by prevalent cheap-overseas-mass-manufactured throwaway items. Americans and Arizonans today truly value the unique quality that can only be found in objects fashioned by well-trained American craft artisans.
At Practical Art, we offer you things made by local artisans for every aspect of your daily life. Each of our artisans makes beautiful, unforgettable gifts which your recipients will always treasure, and you just might decide to keep for yourself.
We are constantly signing new artisans and we get new things in weekly. So, please stop in to experience Practical Art yourself – everything must be touched to be truly appreciated!
